6 Person Tent Buyers Guide
What to look for in a good 6-person Tent
Now that we’ve gotten a sneak peek at our 10 favorite 6 person tents, let’s talk about some of the important factors when buying one. Not all tents are made the same and depending on your purpose, you may want to consider some options over others. Read on as we discuss some of the questions that may arise when buying a 6 person tent.
Can it really fit 6 people?
It is important to remember certain things when it comes to the sizing of tents. They are designed to fit the suggested number of people tightly. Most 6-person tents will not have a ton of extra room for moving around. So that means, if you need to get up in the middle of the night, you may find yourself stepping over a tent partner very closely to get out. Also, the sleeping room will be minimal and you’ll be quite tightly tucked together.
If you’re looking for a little bit of extra room, getting a 6-person tent, and intending to have only 4 or 5 people in it will give you a little extra room. Again 6 person tents can definitely fit 6 people, but it will be tighter.
Are you a loungy camper?
Having an extra screen room can be a bit of a game changer on a tent. The whole point of going camping is to be in the great outdoors. When you’re not out exploring the forest, having a lay down or a place to read a book comfortably can be great. You won’t always want to get into bed where you’re not as much a part of the wilderness anymore.
A screen room is best for people who are going to be relaxing around the campsite and want a protected area where you can still be a part of the action. It can make all the difference if you’re spending time around the campsite and you need shelter but don’t necessarily want to go to bed.
Dome or Cabin?
There are some stark differences between the two designs. Dome tents are a little more compact and can be carried at a lighter weight. If you’re doing long term camping/hiking trips, dome tents can be useful because they will weigh less and take up less room in your camping backpack. They also generally don’t offer you the height and sie wall room that a cabin tent will.
Cabin tents usually have a ceiling almost as big as the floor and allow for comfort when moving around the tent. Cabin tents are great for people who are staying in one spot mostly and want to have easy set-up and easy access to their quarters. Cabin tents tend to have a little more of a roomy floor plan and are more designed for comfort than for compactness.
Think for the Future
Getting a good quality tent that is a bit bigger than you need will ultimately be a smarter investment. Unless you specifically need a smaller, lightweight tent for hiking purposes. Being able to fit more people in as your family grows, or your friend group increase will be convenient later.
It will also give you lots of extra room for the times when there are only the core campers heading out with you. Go for high-quality because needing to replace a tent because of leaks or tears can be really inconvenient. You will thank yourself later.
You should have all the knowledge you need to pick out your favorite 6 person tent. Before you know it, you’ll be out in the great outdoors enjoying the wonders of nature in your new mobile bedroom.
It can always e helpful to pack backup tarps for extra weather resistance. Since you’re outdoors, you never know what’s going to happen. You’re protected inside the tent when it rains, but you’ll have no protection in your lounging or cooking area. Hanging a tarp or two over your hangout area can help you stay dry, warm, and comfortable if the sky falls. Read more camping tips here.
