- One-Person Tent Buyers Guide
Camping is one of the most amazing outdoor activities. Leaving behind the stresses of the city and surrounding yourself with wildlife is sometimes the reset button you need. Whether you’re just out for the weekend, or you are going on a journey through the woods, you need the best gear. One of the most important components of your camping gear is your tent.
That is where you will get all of your much-needed rest and relaxation to help you enjoy the great outdoors. Your tent needs to be strong enough to keep you dry, and portable enough to set up easily and quickly. Without the right tent, you will have a much less enjoyable experience.
You’re not always going to be sharing your sleeping quarters with another person, and when you are alone, you won’t need to have a tent that can house your cousins and their dogs. One person tents are super practical for people who are solo hiking, or who would rather have their own space when on a camping trip. But how do you find the right one person tent for you? Here are our ten favorite picks and a few guidelines for picking out the tent for you.

One-Person Tent Buyers Guide
What to look for in a one-person Tent
You may be asking how to decide between the numerous options for one person tents. As you can tell, not all tents are made the same, and certain criteria set them all apart. So what are the important factors to keep in mind when selecting your one person tent? Here is our buyer’s guide.
The weight is one of the first things you need to consider. The weight of your tent equals the portability of it. If you are doing longer hikes that require you to carry everything on your back, then the lighter tents are more up your alley. But, if you’re doing more stationary camps, then a heavier tent will be more suited for you. Lightweight tents tend to be a little more expensive due to their materials. It is a necessary investment when carrying it on your back. If you don’t need to carry it though, you can gain a little bit of weight with more features and possibly a little more room to allow you to have more than one person on board.
Many tents come equipped with great differences in storage capabilities. More storage is not necessarily as important as the types of storage you have. If you have a single person tent with a lantern hook and gear loft, you may be able to hold more thing conveniently without taking up some corner space. Alternatively, if you would rather have the ceiling open so you can watch the stars, a gear loft may not be necessary.
For anyone who will be spending more time in the tent after dark, a lantern holder can be super useful for helping you locate things in the tent while the sun is down. Most tents will come with corner or side pocket storage, so anything else is just an added bonus.
All of the tents we have listed are high on the durability scale. Your one person tent needs to have durability at the top of its features list. If your tent has punctures or tears in the bottom, then your weatherproofing is almost totally voided. Similarly, you want your fly to be rip-proof and waterproof as well. This is quite literally the barrier between you and the outside world. If the elements are getting in, the purpose of the tent is partially void in the meantime.
Ventilation will be able to keep you cooler on the hotter nights. Condensation can become an issue with tents that don’t offer proper ventilation. With condensation come drips and wet insides. In order to keep you dry and warm, you want to make sure that your tent has features that allow it to be breathable in all conditions. This will result in better air-flow, lower condensation, and higher comfort in hot and cold nights.
The best one person tent will have mesh walls and possibly a ceiling as well. Then, all of the protection comes from the tops and the side, allowing you to be protected while also being able to breathe through the night. Just ensure that the vents open up in a manner that still protects you from rain and wind.
Some tents now are poleless. This means you use trekking poles to erect the tent. Some manufacturers include poles at an additional cost, but this will just increase the weights. If you’re willing to leave the poles behind and give it a go with your trekking poles, you could be saving your back and legs some unwanted fatigue throughout the day.
Ensure that your poles are either made out of aluminum or carbon fiber. Carbon fiber will cost more but is much lighter. Aluminum is cheaper and is very durable. If the poles are made of fiberglass, you should probably avoid them altogether due to their brittle nature. Like bargains? Grab a sleeping bag on a budget.
The best one person tents are there for the taking. Luckily, there are plenty of feasible options for any style of camper. You should now be able to make your buying decision with confidence. Happy Camping!
Your tent will be one of the heaviest items in your bag. The more weight you can keep off in regards to your tent, the more comfortable and enjoyable your hike will be. Find more of our essential camping tips here.
