Garmin is definitely the first name that comes to mind when we think of modern-day navigation. Whether it’s 3-D maps, applications on a smartphone, car clips, or handheld GPS devices, they always have top of the line quality. The Garmin eTrex 30x 010-01508-10 Handheld Navigator is a great example of their standards.
If you’re an avid hunter or simply someone who appreciates maps and doesn’t go for a cell phone every time you want to get somewhere, you’re going to truly enjoy this one. Speaking of cell phones, they’re proven to be quite inaccurate in comparison to something like the Garmin eTrex that uses constant satellite signals to have 100% up to date topography.
At MyProScooter we always do our best to find the most lightweight functional equipment across a handful of outdoor industries. This Garmin navigator was a no-brainer for us to review, since it weighs in at only five ounces while still managing to have plenty of functions for the user to scroll through.
The dimensions are 2.1” x 4.0” x 1.3”, which is fairly compact and much smaller than a typical smartphone. Thanks to the 65k color sunlight readable display, you don’t have to shade the device or hold your hand over it to read the directions. When you’re in a pinch and need immediate answers, this device will perform well.
Quite possibly the most important feature is the fact that the eTrex comes with a pre-loaded base map of the entire world. You don’t have to sit and way for it to buffer, unlike virtually any smartphone that has to reach Wi-Fi or cell service to work correctly. It also has a convenient compass on the front that’s useable anytime you need it.
Then there are all sorts of additional features like speed and distance to your next destination that make life even easier. You can view it as actual mileage, hours and minutes left, the time that you’ll arrive, or all of the above. There’s even a feature that lets you share your progress, location, and other information with other Garmin devices.
+ As far as handheld GPS units go, this Garmin Handheld GPS system is easily one of the lightest and most compact designs available on the market today.
+ The Garmin eTrex uses bigger buttons for quick-acting functionality for people of all ages.
+ Includes a number of features dedicated to displaying how soon you’ll arrive at your destination.
+ Share all of your information with friends and family who have similar Garmin products.
– The only possible con with this product is that the display is 240 x 320 pixels, which isn’t the highest around. That being said, the large font and menu are big enough for anyone to see them, even in a sun lit area.
Who is it Suitable For?
Although many of us have simplistic GPS devices in the palms of our hand’s thanks to smartphones, Garmin navigation systems are much more advanced in every way for the job. Where a cellphone has to load and buffer, these systems already have everything preloaded. They don’t need the internet nearly as much as a smartphone does, and they stay charged far longer than any phone that exists.
In addition to all of that, Garmin has been an expert in the GPS field for many years. Smartphones try to compete, but they simply don’t have as many convenience features. Sharing can be difficult on phones, since they all require Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or another internet source. Overall, this Garmin is suitable for anyone who travels a lot or wants to have uninterrupted directions wherever they go, whenever they need it.
Why We Like It
We like the Garmin eTrex 30x 010-01508-10 Handheld Navigator because it proves that individual handheld GPS systems still reign supreme over smartphones when it comes to getting directions. There are far too many advancements to even compete, and the enlarged buttons are much easier to use than a touch screen device for a lot of us.
The next time you’re heading out for a camping trip far out in the woods or navigating through highways that you’ve never been on, trust in the preloaded maps to get you from A to B without an issue!
