RILLA LIFE – The Background, Story & Scooter Details

The RILLA brand is relatively new to the market, but they’ve already caused a buzz of excitement in the pro scooter community.

RILLA Commit Complete Scooter
RILLA Commit Complete Scooter

The RILLA Commit series is the current limited-edition range on the shelves and we’ve got to say it is an extremely strong, manoeuvrable and attractive first release. It’s lightweight, it’s tough as nails, and it has a definitive sleek look that makes it stand out from the crowd.

The first generation of the RILLA Commit was designed, tested and marketed by a team headed up by a long time scooter aficionado and energetic entrepreneur. We chatted with Tom, the owner, about his philosophy behind the brand and he told us his story: “Since I started riding micro scooters in 2001, I always had a dream of building my own team and company. For the past 11 months I have been working closely full time with designers, developers and pro riders to create a truly epic all-rounder pro scooter. RILLA was born.” The RILLA team currently has 6 professional stunt riders and 2 flow riders in the UK, including Blake Nash who recently switched from Crisp to join the squad.

If you’re looking for a pro scooter that is made by stunters for stunters, you’re in the right place. Every piece of this scooter is meticulously designed for maximum performance and easy handling, so you can be sure that your investment will only make you a better pro stunt rider. Only 300 units of the Commit have been made, which means that if you want one of these you’re going to have to leg it to their website and start customizing your new scooter right now! RILLA parts are also stocked in more than 20 retail stores worldwide, so keep your eyes peeled. We’re about to take you through everything you need to know about this epic new release, so sit back and be prepared to get pumped about RILLA.

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty – can this pro scooter really be as strong and light as advertised?

Well, yes – yes it can. Most of the parts are made with lightweight aluminium, such as the deck and the head tube, but the design interventions in the build of the scooter itself ensures that it doesn’t compromise on strength and stability. The entire scooter has been beefed up with some improved welding and wider gussets for even better solidity and a cleaner finish. If you look closely you can actually see how the thick welds are made precisely and neatly against the frame to keep everything together, while ensuring the scooter is still lightweight.

The handle bars measure 23.7 inches tall, 22.2 inches wide and 1 3/8 inches in diameter, but if you want to order standard bars for a smaller rider you do also have that option. The Chromoly steel that the bars are made from adds a bit of weight of the scooter, but it is still plenty manoeuvrable because of the light aluminium parts such as the deck equivalently sheds this weight elsewhere. The advantage of running chromoly steel bars on your scooter is that they are a lot tougher than aluminium bars. We all have at least one friend who has snapped a set of aluminium bars before! The bar is oversized so you will not need to buy a new set in order to install an HIC (hidden internal compression) or other aftermarket systems, and the clamp on the bottom is actually a triple pin clamp which allows it to be secured nice and tightly. This is a great feature that you don’t see with many newer scooter brands, and these professional touches show us just how much Tom and his crew have thought this design through. If you are slightly taller than the average child, or need a scooter to get around the city and commute on, we recommend taking a look at our collection of the best kick scooters for adults in 2018.

The Lightweight Deck

The deck itself is truly the pièce de résistance of the lot: with the glossy hydroformed head tube and firm foot brake, as well as the urban patterned grip on both sides, you’d be hard pressed to find a better deck on the market today. The head tube is made from a single piece of hydroformed aluminium, and this means it is shaped by super-pressured hydraulic fluid that forms it into the perfect mould. The head tube angle is at an 82.5-degree tilt, and the parameters of the deck itself measure 20.5 inches long and 4.5 inches wide. It may look quite hefty but it is certainly solid, which puts our mind at ease that you’re going to land jumps and smooth grinds without having anything buckle or snap beneath your feet. This adds stability to the lighter aluminium material that might otherwise be a weakness, which is a good move from RILLA to keep the more safety conscious riders smiling. Weighing in at just 1.5kg / 3.30lbs, it’s lighter than a MGP MFX deck (1.8kgs) and only 0.2kgs heavier than an Apex deck of the same length!

Smooth Rolling Wheels

While their range is set to expand steadily as they grow, the current available wheels come exclusively from the Commit series. These wheels are each 110 mm of military grade PU with anodised metal cores, with super smooth bearings to give you an effortless glide. The wheels have the logo printed on both sides which is a great addition, and the colour options for your custom build are once again black, green, red or purple. The selection is set to expand to Freestyle and Kick scooters too, so soon you will be spoilt for choice with new RILLA rims. Weighing in at just 219g per wheel which is lighter than Rivers (245g).

Aluminium Forks

The fork on the RILLA Commit is also made from lightweight aluminium and has a strong thread on its top layer, but you can also get a non-threaded version if you intend to install after-market systems like HIC, SCS or ICS. It’s got built in spacers which make it easy to assemble or modify, and they are suitable for up to 120 mm wheels. The exterior of the piece has also been given extra layers of paint and lacquer to extend its life from chipping and scratching which often occurs. This fork is actually as strong as the popular Apex Zero Degree Forks, which took our number 1 spot for the best pro scooter forks of 2016. These forks weight just 374g! If you are looking to make your scooter super light on the front end and still require some serious strength, these are the forks to go for.

Sleek Grips

The grips on the Commit are modelled after the flangeless ODI style: they have effective shock absorption and increased control without too much extra bulk. The distinct mushroom pattern of this style of grip is great for comfort, and it reduces the fatigue that comes with extended use. If you spend hours at the skate park trying to perfect your jumps, you won’t need to worry about sore hands slowing you down. These grips are already fitted with bar ends so you don’t have to worry about buying extra end caps or plugs to cover them up. Your choice of glossy colours includes black, red, purple and green.

Such a solid deck, I cannot fault it. And the headtube looks amazing!

Whats the full low down?

You can pick up the full standard RILLA Commit package for $250, and there is no extra cost for swapping out the stock black wheels and handles for some more colourful green, red or purple ones. On the whole we’d say the RILLA Commit clearly has a solid construction, and the customizable design allows you to play around a little with getting the style just right for your own look. The entire scooter weighs an easy 3.8 kilograms when assembled, which is lighter than most other retail scooters on the market to date. It can make jumps, flips and grinds look so easy because it really is one of the most manoeuvrable little machines you’ll ride this year.

Based on appearance alone this product can do no wrong, it stays simple with its black and white theme for the deck and crossbar, and doesn’t overdo the branding on the actual parts themselves. You can clearly see the name on the wheels and deck, but these don’t scream RILLA too loudly, they’re more of a reserved but confident nod to the brand’s image. The fact that the deck is so compatible with other parts is also a major plus for those who like to try out new components, because you will want to swap and add different components to get the parts that feel the best under your feet and in your hands.

LOVE my RILLA!
The wheels flow better than my old Rivers!

Apart from spending hours developing the brand and products, the RILLA crew are also really interested in building up the pro scooter community both locally and internationally. RILLA is a brand which seeks to realise the dream that pro scooter stunting can bring people together in sportsmanship and passion, and their place in this dream is to provide quality scooters that everyone can enjoy.

RILLA Day Jam Competition

One of the things they’ve been involved in is holding a community scooter day jam, which brings the youth together to show off their skills or simply learn how to have a ton of fun on a professional scooter course. They kept up a little bit of friendly competition for the crowd and offered prizes throughout the day to keep the atmosphere exciting. Check out just how vibrant the most recent RILLA jam day was in the Bourne Valley of South West England, and be sure to keep an eye out for the RILLA team in their latest video here:

Five star review from ScooterBrad

Another fantastic response from the international community has been the unboxing of the RILLA Commit by ScooterBrad, who took the time to check out the hardware piece by piece just for your viewing pleasure. If you watch to the end of the video you can also get a special promotional code from ScooterBrad himself to get 10% off your first purchase from the RILLA store.

After having given the RILLA Commit a really good testing with rides and customization with his own stock of awesome accessories, ScooterBrad seemed really enthusiastic about the product. His only two major concerns were firstly that the rear axle was not compatible with two of his favoured pegs because the deck channel was too thin, and secondly that the height of the bars were a little too low for his comfort. You can trust ScooterBrad to give an honest and fair assessment of equipment that he puts to the test, so his glowing review over at the RILLA home page just about says it all:
