Bike Shorts Buyers Guide

Welcome to the buyer’s guide, a section where we will be going over a few questions you might have from reading our list above. The goal with this section is to educate those who might not understand what makes cycling shorts so unique to cyclists. This section is perfect for first time buyers who might have been a little confused as to what some of the features mean to some of the shorts above.

Our list was researched over around three months. Multiple people worked on this article at any given time, a team that consisted of both male and female individuals. Our process was simple yet effective, a multi-layered process that had various stages to it that each assessed countless pairs of cycling shorts in the hope that we’d eventually have a short list of products to talk about in an article like this.

During this process, we were able to buy and test out these shorts for ourselves to make sure they lived up to expectations. Multiple people wore these shorts and tested them. Once finished, we met and discussed our findings and established the list you see above. We were very happy with the outcome and wouldn’t change any of the shorts featured for the world! If you do insist on looking for your own pair, then we hope you at least know what to look out for thanks to this section!

When can I wear them?

You can wear cycling shorts every time you mount your bicycle to be honest, although we’d advise you only wear them whenever you are traveling great distances if you only own one pair. If you own one pair and cycle every day, then you might find that they begin to smell (despite some being sweat proof, they still smell). If you want to use them every day, then we’d advise owning multiple pairs to cycle between each day so that they are remaining fresh.

If you want to wear them in the winter, then you’ll find that they not only keep your legs warm but actively keep the circulation in your legs moving, something that’s definitely needed during certain conditions. We’d advise wearing sweatpants/regular workout shorts over the top of these to add to the levels of warmth; it definitely doesn’t hurt to add layers, trust us!

What’s so special about cycling shorts?

Aside from being incredibly comfortable to wear, there is any number of reasons as to why one might want to wear cycling shorts as they’re riding. Most cycle shorts have been designed to stretch, why that comes down to the increase in the movement that these shorts permit. With bike shorts there are no limits to your performance, ask any owner of these shorts, and they’ll all tell you the same thing.

Most pairs you come across utilize anti-chafing materials/designs so that the rider can sweat as much as they like/get wet without the added pain that comes with chaffing. In the past, most riders simply suffered in silence when it came to chaffing, whereas nowadays there’s no need if you own a pair of cycling shorts. In fact, most cycling shorts try to eliminate the moisture between your legs, which again only adds to the performance of the cyclist!

Which brand is the best for cycling shorts?

This is a somewhat open question, one that requires a subjective answer. We personally enjoy the cycling shorts of Santic as they seem to offer the most variety in their products, but that’s just our opinion. If you have ever owned multiple pairs of cycling shorts in the past, then you’ll more than likely have a different answer to us and that’s fine. The goal is to always find what works for you and stick with it!

Try to keep in mind that price doesn’t always equal good quality when it comes to cycling shorts. If a brand has a really expensive pair of cycling shorts for sale, you should always be reading reviews online or checking out the list of features to make sure that they’re legit. You only have yourself to blame if they don’t live up to the hype and you can’t get a refund (unless it comes with a warranty).

What should I look out for when buying cycling shorts?

It goes without saying, but the first thing you should really be looking for is, do they have a pair in your size? Although the material in cycling shorts stretch, this does not then mean that you can buy a pair that’s two sizes too small and hope that they fit. Be sure to measure your waist before you even think about sizes just to make sure that you aren’t buying hastily.

Look out for shorts that are machine washable. Some of these shorts will actually shrink when you wash them if you aren’t careful. Most of these products list whether or not they are washable online so it shouldn’t be too hard to know. Maintaining the quality of your cycling shorts is essential, remember that.

It might very well be the summertime when you buy your cycling shorts so you might be inclined to buy a pair that is relatively thin/lightweight compared to some of the other pairs out right now, which is completely fine if you’re going to wear them just for the summer. If you are going to wear them all year long then, you might want to find a multi-layered pair or at the very least own multiple pairs as we’ve already stated.

Clothing is an important part of cycling, whether you’re doing it for recreational purposes or as a professional sport. This is especially true when it comes to mountain biking, since you’ll often have to push yourself harder and deal with tougher terrain, not to mention windier weather: that being said, not every mountain will be the same, and you might find yourself unprepared for the humidity level, temperature or type of terrain you’ll be going up against.

Down below is our list of some of the best mountain bike shorts, in no particular order, along with some reasons they might be right for you.

These nylon and spandex padded bike shorts are designed to fit like a second skin, staying comfortable without trapping heat or sweat against you on more difficult rides. They offer anti-slip bands around the legs to keep them from riding up while you’re moving, using breathable materials to keep air flowing despite the tight-looking fit, and have small reflective patches woven in to make you visible in low light. The cycling shorts also have six layers of protection overall, acting as a buffer against pressure and weight as well as light impacts.

The design of the shorts is meant to promote blood flow and allow for a full range of movement, making them useful for cycling in cold weather that would make other clothing restrictive to wear. Thanks to the stretchy materials, they can easily accommodate a cyclist who gains or loses a small amount of weight after purchasing them and won’t feel too tight on your body during long rides.

Pros:
+ Breathable, padded and moisture wicking materials
+ Tight, comfortable fit
+ Six layers of padding
+ Durable
+ Reflective patches

Why We Liked It – These shorts are incredibly breathable, making them comfortable even in the most humid weather conditions.

In terms of general comfort, sponeed’s shorts are able to stretch without causing friction burns or uncomfortable tightness if they’re worn for long periods of time.

The 3D Silicon gel padding reduces seat pains without sacrificing ventilation, and the six-panel design is specifically tailored to eliminate chafing and irritation.

Unlike a lot of shorts brands, sponeed also offer to customize their products for cycling teams using their sublimation printing tools, meaning that the logos and color scheme will never wear off, even in harsh weather. They’re also supposed to dry quickly, even after being thoroughly soaked, so they can easily be dried overnight or between bike rides.

+ Quick-dry, skin-friendly materials
+ Silicon gel padding
+ Moisture-wicking internal materials

These Nooyme women’s cycling shorts provide excellent body heat regulation and cushioning, making them ideal for long rides in warm weather. They’re made of a soft, flexible fabric that allows full freedom of movement, including situations where you need to bend at the waist or stretch at awkward angles.

The internal padding provides extra comfort during long rides, as well as acting as slightly springy leg supports to keep your legs in a safe cycling pose – a chamois pad is also woven into the design to increase breathability and comfort while sitting.

The waistband is designed to stay on your waist by using soft, non-irritating silicone grippers, meaning that it won’t slip or roll on your average bike ride. Pros:
+ Regulated body heat and moisture

These cycling shorts are made with breathable materials that make cycling far easier in hot, wet or humid weather, preventing water vapor from sticking to the inside of your clothes. They’re designed to reduce sweating as much as possible, in turn making your ride more comfortable and dealing with any rashes or infections they could otherwise cause.

Santic has deliberately chosen to use a baggy design, making them look like regular shorts when you’re not riding – unlike a lot of other cycling gear, you won’t look out of place in public, and getting a perfect size is slightly less of an issue in the long run. This also left plenty of extra room for padding, and these shorts use a cushioning pad with top 4D Coolmax materials to keep you feeling comfortable during long rides without breaks.

Pros:
+ Cushioned design
+ Breathable, sweat-removing materials
+ Baggy shape, like conventional shorts
+ Non-binding legs for better movement
+ Padding

These shorts use high-quality materials for both flexibility and comfort, being made out of 82% nylon and 18% spandex. This makes them incredibly breathable, especially on the sides of the legs, and allows them to eliminate sweat and water vapor from your body without feeling uncomfortable. The 12-Panel design supports your legs and keeps the shorts in place without restricting your movement, and ensures that it won’t ride up your legs or slip down your waist during an intense ride.

The sides of the shorts have reflective areas to make others aware of your position at night, both from behind and to either side of you. The 4D Coolmax padding gives you extra protection from warm weather and humidity without adding extra bulk to your frame, meaning that it’ll stay aerodynamic while still keeping you comfortable and safe.

Pros:
+ Grippers to prevent legs riding up
+ Breathable materials
+ 4D Coolmax padding
+ Easy to wash
+ Aerodynamic

Why We Liked It – The Coolmax padding makes these shorts really protective without adding extra weight or distorting how they look, keeping them really slim-fitting.

6. NOOYME Women Bike Underwear Gel 3D Padded

NOOYME Women Bike Underwear Gel 3D Padded

Check Price on Amazon

These women’s bike shorts use 3D foam padding to lessen the common pains women can experience on long bike rides – the elastic and chamois padding pushes against the skin without irritating it, helping to support your muscles and make most bike trails more comfortable. The breathable fabric has been chosen to wick away moisture and fight off humidity, with the hip-fitting shape meaning that your legs won’t overheat by being covered up.

The Anatomic Multi-Layer design allows these shorts to retain their shape through nearly any conditions, regardless of whether they’ve been worn often or left in a suitcase for days on end. Even if they do lose their shape, the squishy and flexible fabric means that they can easily be stretched out to fit again without any issues.

Pros:
+ Padded, multi-layered design
+ Small enough to wear under other clothes
+ Retains shape
+ Flexible materials for extra movement
+ Relieves pain

Why We Liked It – These shorts are nice and tight, but the elastic materials keep them feeling comfortable without damaging your skin or causing chafing.

beroy Womens Bike Shorts with 3D Gel Padded

Beroy’s padded shorts make good use of stretchy fabrics, allowing them to stick closer to your skin without feeling uncomfortable or restrictive. They also absorb a lot of moisture and perspiration, meaning that they can help keep you cool and dry in wet, humid or extremely hot weather. The seams of the shorts are sealed tight, allowing them to stretch properly without breaking, and there are three layers of foam padding to reinforce them while also keeping you comfortable during your ride.

The company has also tried to reduce how much lactic acid builds up in your muscles thanks to the silicone hems, which keep the shorts tight against your legs at all times and promotes better blood flow. On top of that, Beroy has managed to use thicker materials around certain areas of your legs to support your bones and make cycling less tiring.

Pros:
+ Moisture absorbent
+ Plenty of comfortable padding
+ Low friction against skin
+ Durable, multi-layered construction
+ Tight but the comfortable hem

Why We Liked It – The way that shorts promote blood flow is something that high-energy cyclists will love, especially if they use cycling as a type of cardio exercise.

The lower area has plenty of padding and support, making pain from long periods of cycling less of an issue, and the outer layer is durable enough to last a long time before showing sights of damage.

Inside the shorts, themselves is a section of 3D padding that protects you from seat pains and helps your shorts keep their shape, along with an elastic waistband that keeps them tight even if the leg sections are slightly too baggy for you. The microfiber layers of these bike shorts are designed to deal with abrasion and chafing skin, making them really comfortable while still holding a tight fit on your body. They’re also flexible, able to move with you rather than restricting your muscle movements and offers a thick layer of padding to better protect you while you’re riding, even if you’ve angled your body forwards. The design of these shorts helps protect you from saddle sores or other biking-related pains and skin issues but doesn’t sacrifice comfort or durability in the process.

The 3D gel padding and foam inner layer still allow air to flow through, which also aids in letting out perspiration and dealing with humid conditions. The tight-fitting hems suck away extra sweat and keep your lower body comfortably dry, drastically improving the quality of any ride, especially those in wet weather.

Pros:
+ Designed to stop chafing
+ Breathable
+ Absorb and wick moisture
+ Tight but comfortable hems
+ Protects you from poor weather

Why We Liked It – The flexibility of these shorts give you full freedom of movement, regardless of what angle you’re sitting at while you cycle.

These multi-material shorts use antibacterial memory foam to mold to your body shape, slowly adjusting to fit you better over the course of each ride. Both the inner and outer layers are made with moisture-wicking materials that keep you comfortable and dry, with the rear area also using thermoregulating padding to deal with both sweat and body heat in a way that doesn’t distract from your riding experience.

The inner seams and waist can easily stretch to accommodate most body shapes, especially around the waistline and hems, but still rest tightly against your body to better support your movements – you can even see most of the supporting seams and trims on the outer lining. The entire garment has been designed to prevent pinching and uncomfortable folding, acting like a tight underlayer that you can wear individually or lay under another piece of clothing.

Pros:
+ Regulates heat and sweat
+ Comfortably tight
+ Reflective accents that don’t seem obnoxious
+ Skin-tight, can fit under other clothes
+ Uses memory foam for a more tailored experience
Why We Liked It: The memory foam is the main draw here since the shorts can mold to your exact body shape time and time again.

Mountain Bike Shorts Buyers Guide

The Style

“Shorts” is a very broad term, and there are dozens of ways a single brand can vary their product while still keeping it under the same category of clothing. Some people might prefer a tight-fitting pair that mold to their body shape, while others might want a less streamlined style that can double as normal shorts when they’re not cycling.

Comfort

Staying comfortable is one of the key things you should consider when buying some mountain bike shorts – it’s no secret that tougher bike routes can lead to you being in more pain afterward, especially if the saddle is constantly rubbing or pushing against your backside and inner legs. There are a lot of things to consider in terms of comfort: the size, materials, texture, stretchiness, and supportiveness of your shorts will all make a difference, no matter how small.

The level of comfort you need will also change as you change your biking habits – if you suddenly switch to taking rougher routes, you’ll need more padding to deal with the bumps and impacts, for example.

Skill Level

If you’re very new to cycling, either because you’ve just learned how or you’ve just picked it up as a hobby, you don’t need super-specialized gear. A lot of high-end clothing is meant for professionals and long-time cyclists, and might actually end up feeling uncomfortable if you’re not used to them. That’s not to say you can’t buy them, but something simpler might be a better place to start. Professionals, on the other hand, should avoid underselling themselves: using high-tier cycling gear can make a huge difference in your performance.

Which color should my shorts be?

While color isn’t too important, it can still matter for late-night or early-morning cycling. If you’re a fan of cycling in the dark, make sure you’re choosing vivid colors that can make you stand out to others on dangerous trails.

How many pairs should I buy?

This depends on how long a given pair will last, but the average cyclist usually won’t need more than one or two at any given time. If you’re a fan of taking on different challenges and trails, it might be worth keeping a few different pairs around to deal with different types of weather.

If your bike is the bread of cycling, then clothing is the better – your body will always have physical limits that no amount of training and practice can break, but wearing the right gear can make a huge difference in the length and quality of your ride, especially when you’re trying to take on extreme weather.

If you don’t count road bike helmets as clothing, then shorts are probably the most common piece of cyclist’s gear you’ll see – there’s so much of it that buying a pair can feel overwhelming.

Below is our hand-picked list of some of the best cycling shorts we could find, for both newcomers and long-time cyclists.

1. sponeed Men’s Cycling Shorts Bicycle

sponeed Men's Cycling Shorts Bicycle

These padded bicycle shorts use a mesh design to let your skin breathe on intense rides, but are still water-resistant enough to shake off heavy rain and accidental splashes from puddles, and even use quick-drying materials to keep you comfortable after the rain stops. The anti-slip silicon and on each leg means that they won’t naturally pull up while you’re moving, keeping them tight against your body at all times.

Thanks to the sports-grade elastic used in their construction, these shorts are also deceptively durable without being rough on your skin, using plenty of soft padding to protect you from harm and keep you feeling secure no matter what conditions you’re cycling in. The 3D gel helps lessen shocks from impacts and adds an extra layer of comfort to whatever position you’re sitting in, and certain areas use antimicrobial and moisture-wicking materials to keep your body clean in dirty conditions.

Pros:
+ Water-resistant
+ Won’t ride up your legs
+ Lots of padding
+ Skin-friendly
+ Quick-drying materials

Why We Liked It – These shorts protect your waist, pelvic area and upper thighs from multiple weather-related annoyances, letting you enjoy your ride in any conditions.

You might like Mountain bike shorts.

The 4D COOLMAX cushion pad that lines the inside of these shorts solves one of the most prevalent problems with riding a bike – the pain the saddle can cause to your lower body. This extra padding keeps you comfortable on even the bumpiest trails, while also helping to wick away moisture and filter out water vapor.

The baggy fit of these shorts is an intentional design choice that helps keep you cool during hot weather without feeling stuffy or claustrophobic. Unlike a lot of tight-fit cycling clothes, they allow for better airflow and make sweat much less of a problem without having to rely on specific materials, giving them a familiar texture and appearance that lets them double as normal shorts when you’re not cycling.

Pros:
+ Loose-fitting
+ 4D COOLMAX padding
+ Look like regular shorts from the outside
+ Reduce sweat
+ Non-binding legs

Why We Liked It – These loose-fitting shorts are ideal for cyclists who want to wear a comfortable, normal-looking outfit on their rides without getting too sweaty or overheating.

3. Santic Cycling Men’s Shorts Biking Bicycle

Santic Cycling Men's Shorts Biking Bicycle

The breathable mesh on the sides of these shorts helps eliminate most of the sweat being produced by your lower body, making the average ride far more comfortable – especially in warm weather. The waistband is designed to be tight without feeling clingy or awkward to wear, stopping them from slipping down your body or letting dirt, sand, and water get under your clothes.

The double layers of 4D COOLMAX padding add a surprising amount of comfort to whatever you’re doing, whether you’re riding for relaxation or in the middle of a heated bike race. The small reflective logo on each side keeps you visible in low-light conditions, meaning that you can cycle late at night without putting yourself at risk.

Pros:
+ Comfortable
+ Breathable
+ Won’t slip
+ Reflective labels
+ Double-layered padding for more protection

Why We Liked It – Externally, these shorts don’t seem too special, but their design hides some heavy-duty padding and an excellent set of breathable panels in key places.

These sponeed shorts combine a skin-friendly design, a tight fit and weather-resistant materials to make a piece of clothing that can keep you comfortable through almost all conditions, as well as regulating your own body heat and sweat. The silicone band at the bottom of each leg helps keep your shorts in place while you’re on the move but doesn’t constrict blood or air flow, and the high-quality 3d gel padding on the inside protects the vulnerable parts of your body from unnecessary pain or irritation.

The stretchy, flexible design prevents rubbing and chafing mid-ride, no matter how fast you’re going or how intense the ride has become, and are much less likely to rip or tear during general use. The materials are also supposed to resist wet weather, high temperatures, and fading from direct sunlight, meaning that they can last a long time if you wash them regularly.

Pros:
+ Flexible
+ Weather-resistant and durable
+ Tight, comfortable fit
+ Regulates sweat
+ Doesn’t restrict your body

Why We Liked It – These shorts are an excellent choice for new cyclists and veterans alike since they last a long time and will provide constant consistent protection.

These shorts make heavy use of padding to keep your lower body safe and secure on bumpy roads and trails, but still, stretch and flex enough to allow for fluid movement, even in cold weather that could make other clothing feel restrictive. The two-panel design keeps them simple and easy to wear without leaving any vulnerable spots that could let the elements in.

The two layers of antibacterial padding give you plenty of protection from bacteria and sweat build-up, using a breathable mesh to let air flow through without giving rainwater and dirt a way to get under your clothes. Not only that, but the silicone grippers around the legs mean that they tighten against your skin, keeping your shorts sealed from the elements.

Pros:
+ Breathable
+ Reflective logos on both sides
+ Antibacterial padding
+ Double-layered design
+ Stretchy and flexible

Why We Liked It – These Santic shorts are a great balance of comfortable, protective and flexible, making them useful in almost any situation under any weather conditions.

These Baleaf shorts are lightweight and comfortable, offering a great level of protection for something so thin and easy to wear. The wide waistband is made of elastic, letting it tighten to perfectly fit your skin without feeling uncomfortable or irritated during long rides, which also helps make it more rain and dirt-resistant.

The 3D cushioning on the inside absorbs shocks and impacts by a decent amount, dampening repeated bumps and bashes from rough ground, and the moisture-wicking fabrics keep sweat and water vapor from building up while you’re focusing on trying to ride.

Pros:
+ Shock-absorbing cushioning
+ Elastic waistband
+ Comfortable
+ Lightweight
+ Uses moisture-wicking materials

Why We Liked It – These shorts are simple but effective, combining a lot of useful features into a single garment that doesn’t hide its sporty appearance.

7. Louis Garneau Men’s Fit Sensor 2

These shorts are designed to stretch on your body, accommodating a range of different body shapes and sizes without tearing or getting permanently deformed, and use a range of different materials chosen to avoid irritating your skin. The chamois padding keeps sensitive parts of your body safe from harm on rough terrain, letting you relax and enjoy your ride even if it’s not on perfectly smooth ground.

The brushed-back fabrics help wick away moisture and regulate your body heat, keeping you dry and managing your temperature in both hot and cold weather to make each ride slightly more comfortable for you. Thanks to the reflective accents on each side of the shorts, you can stay visible in low light without needing to attach extra reflective strips to your bike.

Pros:
+ Comfortable chamois padding
+ Doesn’t irritate skin
+ Hard to damage
+ Moisture-wicking materials
+ Reflective labels

Why We Liked It – The padding used in these shorts is its main selling point, and it can keep rough rides comfortable no matter how experienced you are at cycling.

8. Eco-daily Men’s 4D Cycling Shorts Breathable

The six layers of foam used inside these shorts help keep you protected from irritation, injuries, and pain during long rides and tough races, and are durable enough to survive hundreds of hard impacts without showing any signs of wear. The stretchy materials can easily accommodate your body, even if you gain or lose some weight or muscle after first buying them, and the perforated surface keeps them lightweight and breathable under any weather conditions.

Due to the 14 panel-based design, the shorts can help support your muscles to promote better blood flow, making your cycling slightly easier by simply wearing them. Due to their size, they can also work as an underlayer for other clothing, giving you extra physical protection from both collision and poor weather without limiting your wardrobe.

Pros:
+ Durable
+ Comfortable and protective
+ Stretch to fit your body

Beroy has carefully designed these women’s cycling shorts to reduce the lactic acid build up in your muscles, making intense cycling much easier regardless of whether you’re a first-timer or a long-time cyclist. The smooth materials serve two purposes: they reduce friction on the outside of the shorts, letting them fit comfortably under other clothing without pulling or dragging, and also will prevent skin irritation on the inside of your shorts to make them much nicer to wear.

The silicone hems used in their design prevents these shorts from riding up your skin or letting sweat build up on your upper legs. Most of the fabrics used to line the inside can absorb the moisture from your sweat, which helps make the internal padding far less irritating on your skin and making humid weather much less of a problem.

Pros:
+ Moisture-absorbing lining
+ Low-friction
+ Reduces lactic acid build up
+ Won’t ride up your legs
+ Doesn’t irritate the skin

Why We Liked It: These women’s bike shorts are incredibly comfortable and moisture-absorbent, and offer excellent protection from skin damage or irritation while wearing them.

These lycra and polyester shorts are able to stay breathable in any weather, using a baggy design to leave more space for air to flow through. The non-binding legs don’t use any tight hems or bands to stick to your legs, keeping them loose and giving you a better range of movement without exposing too much of your lower body to the elements.

The cushioned seats use 4D COOLMAX padding to give you extra protection from injuries without adding any uncomfortable bulkiness to your clothing, and the internal lining helps eliminate bacterial infections and skin irritation while wearing them. The simple outer layer design means that they can also be used as regular shorts while you’re not cycling,

Pros:
+ Casual, comfortable design
+ 4D COOLMAX cushioning
+ Allows natural movement
+ Lightweight
+ Very breathable

Why We Liked It – These casual cycling shorts are great for wet and humid weather, but they’re also excellent for cyclists who want a better range of movement while they’re off on their bike.

Cycling Shorts Buyers Guide

Design

There are dozens of different styles and designs on offer, with different manufacturers and brands having their own twists on what a “regular” pair of cycling shorts will be. Some might offer tighter fits, whereas others will focus on looser pairs that leave space between the inner lining and the skin. Materials, colors and even the size chart could differ from one brand to another, so the general design and style of a pair of shorts won’t necessarily be an exact match with another pair that look the same.

Comfort

Comfortable shorts are much better than rough, clingy or irritating pairs, but the exact definition of comfort will change depending on what you see as the highest priority. For example, if you prefer a smooth ride to help you relax, comfortable padding and materials might be more important than things like water resistance and body heat regulation. On the other hand, you might also consider water-resistant and breathable shorts the most comfortable if you’re often cycling against poor conditions or through humid areas.

Buyers Guide Questions:

How many pairs of shorts do I need?

Some types of cycling will wear out your shorts faster, especially if you’re focusing on using them for intense races or rough tracks that need to make full use of their padding and protective materials. It’s a good idea to have at least one pair spare, but if you’re always cycling in different conditions, you might need to keep multiple sets that you can choose between depending on what the weather will be like.

If you’re a professional cyclist or get involved in serious races, you should always keep spares of any equipment and clothing you buy – you never know when you might damage or lose some, and getting a replacement could take a while. This is especially true for clothing that has team logos or brand colors on it since those are often custom prints that will take longer to finish and ship than a generic set of shorts.

Should I use my shorts as an underlayer?

A lot of cyclists like to use thin shorts as a second layer underneath an outer layer of cycling shorts or pants. This usually comes down to whether or not you need the extra protection – you won’t usually get much extra comfort out of a second layer compared to simply having a single padded one, but they can make it much easier to deal with cold weather and wet conditions.

You could also use them underneath regular shorts to give yourself extra protection while still having casual clothes on, which is great if you like to use cycling to travel from place to place but don’t want to be walking around in full, visible cycling gear all the time.
