Two in one scooter are a perfect option for small children who are just beginning to learn how to ride these vehicles because they can be ridden like a regular scooter and come with a seat that’s handy once your little one gets tired.

This ride is made for kids as young as two years old but can withstand a load of 110 lbs. The handlebar height is adjustable. That means that your kid won’t outgrow it quite that fast. In fact, they will be able to enjoy this toy up until they’re in their tweens.

The materials used – aluminum alloy, stainless steel, and plastic – make this scooter both sturdy and lightweight. The lean-to-steer technology makes it great fun to ride and also helps develop balance and coordination.

  • Safe for toddlers and young children
  • Has a combo of high end and cheaper materials to keep costs down
  • Wheels light up and they are made of a quiet polyurethane material

  • Might be hard to steer for a lightweight child

Our Verdict on Lascoota 2 in 1

This is a well-made scooter, that’s both safe and good looking and it comes with a lot of nice features, like the light-up wheels. It’s a great choice for a beginner or a toddler, and due to both the build quality, as well as the adjustability, it will brings years of joy.

2. Micro Kickboard Mini 3in1 – Premium Choice

Reasons to buy
  • Extremely adjustable for kids of different age
  • Can be ridden by toddlers as young as 1
  • Top Quality product from a well-known brand
Micro Kickboard Mini

Check Price on Amazon

The next scooter on our list is something quite simple, but genius. The Micro Mini 3in1 is a convertible scooter, which means you actually get 3 rides for the price of one. The best part about it is that children as young as 1 year old can ride it.

It’s a very simple concept: the ride consists of a super low and durable deck, that features 3 wheels that give it more stability. The genius part is the different handlebars it comes with. If you are getting the ride for your 1-year-old, you will attach the small handlebar and the seat, so that your toddler can use it as a pushbike.

Once they master riding that, you can lose the seat and have them ride the scooter like any regular one. At one point they will grow out of that handlebar, then it’s time for the regular-sized alloy one, which is again adjustable in height.

  • 3 rides for the price of one
  • High quality built
  • Detachable seat for added comfort
  • Large wheels for smooth rides

  • In higher price range

Our Verdict on Micro Kickboard

You usually wouldn’t want to spend a lot of money on a toy for a toddler, but the Micro Mini 3in1 is definitely worth the money, considering that it will easily grow with your toddler and also gradually help them master riding scooters.

3. Radio Flyer ‘My 1st Scooter’ – Editor’s Choice

Reasons to buy
  • Designed for beginner riders

  • The wide deck is textured which adds traction and stability
Radio Flyer First Scooter

The “My 1st Scooter” is, as the name suggests, a great beginner scooter for toddlers and small children. It will help them understand the mechanics of riding scooters while being very safe and fun.

It has a wider deck than most other scooters, making it easier for very young riders to get their feet up. It’s also almost entirely made of soft plastic, which makes it both lightweight and safe for toddlers – keep in mind that falls will happen while your kid is learning how to ride, and when they do, you don’t want a heavy and rock-hard scooter pressing down on your kid.

The grip handle is ergonomically designed and the whole thing can bear up to 50 pounds which is more than enough. It comes in two colors: pink and red so both girls and boys can push it. Your tot will learn to balance in no time with this thing.

  • Lightweight
  • Great Build Quality
  • Wide Foot Deck
  • Safe for very young riders

  • It’s slower than other models
  • The handlebar is not adjustable

Our Verdict on Radio Flyer My First Scooter

As far as beginner scooters for toddlers go, it does not get much better than the Radio Flyer. It’s safe, it’s affordable, and very comfortable. It’s also one of the rare 3-wheel scooters that are steered by turning the handlebar in the desired direction. It’s not as fast as other models, but for a beginner that’s not that important anyway.

4. Razor Jr. Lil’ Kick Scooter – Best Toddler Scooter with Handlebar Steer

Reasons to buy
  • 3-wheel design for added stability
  • Large smooth-rolling wheels
  • Available in two colors
Razor Jr Lil Kick Scooter'

Check Price on Amazon

Razor, a well-known and trusted manufacturer of scooters, took a different approach to the 3-wheel toddler scooters by adding the third wheel in the back, rather than the front. This still helps with balancing, but also allows the scooter to be steered using the handlebar, and not by leaning.

As we discussed both in our guide, as well as in previous reviews, the lean-to-steer technology that most toddler scooters use is both great for developing coordination, but also an unavoidable byproduct of the third wheel in the front. Sure, lots of kids love to steer their scooters this way, but not all.

Here’s where the Razor Jr. Lil’ Kick Scooter comes into play. It has a very similar design to your average scooter, including the steering system, but it has an added wheel at the back, making the scooter a self-balancing one. This means that your kid can still ride it easily without having to balance the scooter all by themselves, but it’s also a lot more similar to riding a regular kick scooter.

  • Wide slip-resistant deck
  • Low profile for easy scooting
  • Sturdy welded steel frame
  • Padded handlebar for added safety

  • The deck is quite short
  • The handlebar is not adjustable

Our Verdict on Razor Jr. Lil’ Kick Scooter

The main advantage that this scooter offers compared to many others on this list is that it is ridden like a regular scooter. Lean-to-steer sure has its good sides, but a lot of toddlers and kids find it hard to ride a scooter like that, and even if they don’t – once they transition to a regular kick scooter, they will have a harder time adjusting. The Razor Jr. Lil’ kick scooter is also a bit more intuitive to ride.

The two front wheels are also oversized and act as a suspension system, making the ride very smooth even on rough surfaces.

All three wheels light up when in motion, and the faster the scooter goes, the brighter they shine. That does not just look really cool, but also provides more safety by improving the visibility of both the scooter and the little rider.

  • Adjustable handlebar

  • Light-up wheels
  • Lean-to-Steer

15. Globber Evo 4-in-1 – Best Convertible Scooter

Reasons to buy
  • Easily transform the ride with the push of a button
  • Patented steering lock button
  • High-quality parts
Globber Evo 4 in 1

Check Price on Amazon

Convertible scooters are one of the best first rides you can get for your toddler. They get to experience what it feels like to kick a ride, but they also have a larger handle at the back so mum and dad can push along. Once your little one has mastered the technique of pushing the scoot, the larger handlebar can be detached, forming into a useful pushbike.

Pushbikes offer toddlers the freedom of moving around without your help but are still easier to ride than propper scooters because they are a lot easier to balance. Once your kid has mastered this stage too, it’s time to move to the next one: the 3 wheel scooter.

By removing the small handlebar and attaching the larger one at the front, you get a propper 3 wheeled scooter with adjustable height. Your kid can now learn how to steer, balance, and ride like a little pro.

  • Adjustable handlebar
  • Low deck for easier kicking
  • 3 vehicles in one
  • Large front wheels for smoother rides

  • Comes in only one color

Our Verdict Globber Evo 4-in-One Scooter

This convertible scooter is probably the safest choice if your toddler has never ridden a scooter before. You can easily make them comfortable with these kinds of vehicles, without jeopardizing their safety. Considering that this scooter is suitable for kids aged 15 months to 6 years, you see why we think it’s worth the money.

Ultimate Buyers Guide to Scooters for Toddlers

3 Wheel and 2 Wheel Scooters

The first decision you will have to make is if you want to get a two-wheel or three-wheel scooter for your kid. Both types have their advantages and both are also quite popular, so which one to choose?

Well, three-wheel scooters were specially designed for toddlers and are a lot easier to balance. These types of scooters can stand by themselves, so your little one can focus solely on moving forward, without having to worry about the scooter tipping over.

They are also steered in a different way. A two-wheeled scooter is steered using the handlebar, similar to a bike. Three-wheeled scooters function a bit differently, as they usually require the rider to lean in the direction they want to move, similar to a skateboard.

This lean-to-steer technology is considered to be great for toddlers since it helps them improve balance and coordination, but it’s also a bit harder to do than just turning the handlebar in the desired direction.

So it really depends on your kid. It’s usually preferable to get a three-wheeled scooter for a very young child and then upgrade to a two-wheeled one once the kid has some experience. Although, if your kid is stronger than your average toddler, and has no problems balancing, then you might opt for a two-wheeled from the beginning.

Choosing the right Wheel Size

The diameter of the roller on a scooter is generally 100 mm, but they do come in a lot of different sizes. A rule of thumb is the larger the wheels, the smoother the ride. Although, with toddlers and small children, there is another thing to consider – larger wheels usually go faster than smaller ones.

For a beginner, it is therefore usually better to stick to the standard 100mm wheels. They will provide a bumpier ride than larger ones would, but are also a lot safer since the toddler would need to put in a lot of energy to get to a dangerous speed.

You’ll also see scooters with smaller wheels than that, but those are usually pro scooters designed specifically for stunts and tricks. If your kid is a beginner, you will not want to get them a pro scooter. As the name suggests, those are made for pro riders and can be dangerous for little kids and total beginners.

Toddler Scooter Weight

The weight of the scooter you’re getting for your kid is one of the most important factors to consider, and what weight to aim for depends largely on the age and weight of your kid.

If you are looking for a scooter for a toddler, you want to get the lightest one that you can find. The reason here is simple: a toddler is small and pushing a super heavy metal scooter will be more work than fun. They are also safer than havier ones, because falls will happen, and when they do, you don’t want your toddler to be hit by a super heavy scooter.

On the other hand, those super lightweight scooters are usually a lot less durable. That’s because those are made of plastic, and plastic will wear out over time, whereas an alloy deck and handlebar can withstand a lot of use and abuse.

There are also super lightweight and durable models, but those are usually pro scooters and they aren’t cheap. They are not recommended for beginners, and especially not for toddlers. So if you are getting a scooter for your toddler, go for a very lightweight one. It won’t last forever, but it does also not have to. At a certain point, your kid’s skills will improve, and you’ll need to buy another scooter whether the first one broke or not. If your kid is a bit older and stronger, you can go for a sturdier and heavier model.

Weight Capacity

Since these toys are made from very light materials to reduce their own weight, they have a limited weight capacity. Most of them would be able to withstand a weight of 40 pounds, which is more than enough for toddlers.

Some premium models are very sturdy despite having light parts and can withstand weight over 100 pounds. This means that when your child grows they will still be able to scoot on them, but they usually also cost a lot more than your regular scooter.

For whichever you decide to go, make sure you check the manufacturer’s label and make sure that the scooter you picked can withstand your kid’s weight and then some – don’t forget that even toddlers have things to carry around, like toys or lunchboxes.

Toddler Scooter Deck

Since toddlers have are still developing their eye-feet coordination, decks for toddler scooters are designed to be wider. That makes it easier for them to put their feet on the deck. It also allows them to put both feet up at the same time, which is useful once your little one gets tired and you need to push them on the scooter.

The decks of those scooters are also lower, which improves support and stability and makes it easier for them to balance on it. It’s also good to go for a shorter deck if your kid is very young because scooters with shorter decks are easier to kick.

Handlebar Height

The height of the handlebar is another important factor. If the handlebar of your kid’s scooter is too low or too high, the scooter will be uncomfortable to ride and potentially even dangerous. Luckily, most commercially available scooters have adjustable handlebars. That enables you to adjust the height to your kid’s needs. It also saves money, since your kid won’t outgrow the scooter quite as fast.

There are also scooters where the handlebar is forged out of one piece of metal and is therefore not adjustable. It does have an advantage because it makes the scooter a lot more sturdy, which is very important if your kid is using the scooter for jumps and tricks.
For toddler scooter, this does not really have a lot of benefits though.

For the most comfortable ride, choose a height that reaches the waist of your kid. They should not have to hunch a lot as that will affect their balance. On the other hand, if it is too high it will again be difficult to control and maneuver.

Lean-to Steer or Handlebar Steer – Steering Mechanism on Toddler Scooters

As we already mentioned while talking about the difference between 2 and 3 wheeled scooters, there are two ways to steer a scooter: by using the handlebar, or by using your own bodyweight.  There are some scooters that offer both, but usually, you’ll have to pick one way. Which one to go for depends both on the age and preferences of the rider.

Lean-to-steer means exactly what the name says – the rider has to lean in the direction they want the scooter to go. It’s much similar to riding a skateboard and a lot of kids prefer this style of riding. It is however mostly used for toddler scooters, since those usually have 3 wheels, and steering them otherwise would be difficult. It’s also great for toddlers since it trains their balance and coordination.

The other type of steering – by just turning the handlebar in the desired direction – is much more intuitive and has no real downsides. Most scooters made for riders age 5 and older will use this technology.

It is more of a personal preference as to which steering mechanism method to choose. As a parent, you understand your child the most so choose whichever you think would make your kid’s ride easy and fun.

Scooters for toddlers and young children are actually quite cheap and you can get a variety of them for under 30$. The wast majority of toddler scooters are mainly made out of plastic, which makes them soft and lightweight, but also a lot cheaper than other rides.

If your kid is older and you are looking for a more stable and long-lasting scooter then you can still get a lot of different ones for under 100$. The initial cost is, therefore, a bit higher, but those scooters will also last a lot longer.

If you are looking for a pro scooter for your kid, then you might want to spend a bit more. These are the scooters that have to endure the most, so you want to make sure you get something that is high quality. Good beginner stunt scooters can be found for 100-150$.

Scooter Accessories, Colors & Styles

As you can imagine, there are tons of accessories that you can get for your kid’s scooter: you can get all sorts of grips, stickers, bottleholders, or even pegs if your kid wants to try some beginner tricks. You can also get replacement wheels in different colors, or even ones that light up. All of that isn’t necessary, but will make the ride more fun for your kid and is also a great and cheap way to make an older scooter look like a brand new toy.

As for colors and styles, you can probably find anything your kid desires. Be it urban styles, cool-looking scooters with LEDs, or even something inspired by a movie or TV show – there’s something for everyone. The only thing to consider here is to make sure you get something that your kid won’t get tired of quickly.

Are Toddler Scooters Safe while riding Pro Scooters?

In general, toddler scooter toys are safe as they don’t have pointy edges and are often built of light and soft materials. However, no toddler scooter toy manufacturer will guarantee the toddler’s safety without constant supervision.

As a parent, your child’s safety is your number one concern, and naturally, you want to make sure that they do not hurt themselves in any way. When it comes to scooters for toddlers, safety is also a high priority for manufacturers and they tend to be different from the ones older children or teenagers ride.

To address the issue of safety, these have wider decks and three rollers instead of two (some even have four). The wider deck ensures that your child gets a stable ride and can give them enough room to place both feet. These are also lower towards the ground so the kid does not have to push too much and is able to balance it easily.

Similarly, the two wheels either on the front or back add more stability. These are also big-sized to absorb any shocks from the surface your kid is riding on. The handlebar grips are also designed to be soft yet sticky at the same time so as to provide the necessary support to the kid to control his or her ride.

Additionally, you have to make sure that the kid wears a helmet whenever riding. This is even more important for newbies as they will be striving to learn to balance and will need the security that only a helmet can provide.

You can easily find special scoot or bike helmets for toddlers online and some brands also have this as a side product. You should also teach them to be street-wise i.e. if they are riding on the walkway they should stop in driveways, and they should not go on the street! Toddlers should never be scooting outside unattended.

How Long Will The Toddler Scooter Last?

Toddler scooters will usually last between 2 and 3 years depending on the scooter you bought (general quality build) and how your toddler uses it.

This is also one of the primary concerns of parents that perhaps they will have to replace a toy all too soon or their child would outgrow it. This is true that your child will outgrow it at some time but that should not happen very early.

Many of these toys are designed for a decent age range so your child can easily ride for two to three years. Some have an adjustable handlebar so that the scooter can practically grow with your kid.

Built quality is of course a major factor in the longevity of the scooter. Some brands have parts available that can easily be replaced and thereby removing the need to buy a whole new scooter if something breaks. These parts are usually very cheap too.
