Mountain Bike Under $300 Buyers Guide

When looking for a mountain bike, there are certain features of the bike which you should look for in detail.  For example, the materials and the style of features included are very important, as are the suspension and gear details which will affect your cycling experience.  We have compiled a list of features to specifically look for when purchasing a new mountain bike.

Frame

While the shape of the frame may be favored due to taste and aesthetics, the material of the frame certainly possesses some significance in terms of cycling capability.  Cheaper bikes will include steel in the material used for the frame, which can be heavy and can be a hindrance for your cycling performance and ease of use.

Finding a mountain bike which uses aluminum as the frame material may be costly and cause you to reach the upper ends of your budget, but aluminum is much lighter, resulting in easier maneuverability and a faster speed time on the trail.

Gears

A higher amount of gears available on your mountain bike provides you with additional options and versatility.  When cycling up a steep hill, a higher number of gears will mean that you can change gear in smaller steps, achieving an increase in precision and a more effortless ride.  An ideal minimum number of gears is having nine gears towards the rear of your mountain bike, being paired to a crank possessing three rings at the front of the bike.

Brakes

The ideal type of brake to feature on your mountain bike is a disc brake, providing effective performance in comparison with the traditional brakes which squeezed the wheel rim in order to stop.  Additional stopping power can be found if your brakes use the hydraulic fluid as opposed to the traditional cables.  This will further ensure that your mountain bike will require less maintenance.

Tires

Choosing the right type of mountain bike tires will vary on what you will be using the mountain bike for.  For example, if you will be carrying out your daily work commute, then typical mountain bike tires will suffice.  However, if you are considering riding off-road across varying terrain, then you will require tougher tires.

Suspension Forks

A bonus for off-road riding is the inclusion of a suspension fork, although mountain bikes which contain this feature can be expensive.  A rigid suspension fork may be a good option to keep costs low, particularly if it is fitted for a cheaper mountain bike under 200 dollars.

Full Suspension

Look out for mountain bikes which claim to possess full suspension.  This is a perfect feature and is when the bike has suspension at the front wheel and the back wheel.

Wheel Size

The size of your mountain bike wheels is very important.  If the wheels are too small for your height, then you may find that your legs are squashed up, proving to be an uncomfortable ride.  If your wheels are too big for your height, then you may find it a struggle to sit on the bike never mind ride it.  First of all, you must accurately measure your height in feet and inches.

The best way to do this is to stand against a wall and mark the top of your head measurement with a pencil.  Then take a tape measure and measure the wall from the floor up to the pencil mark.  Next, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to find out what size mountain bike you will need.

Typically, a 24-inch wheel will fit an individual who is around 5-feet tall while a mountain bike with 26-inch wheels will fit most individuals between 5-feet and 6-inches tall through to 5-feet 10-inches tall.  You can find mountain bikes with bigger wheels, however, if you are a taller height than this.

Does it matter whether my bike has lots of gears?

A:  This depends upon what you want from your bike and where you will be using your bike.  If you will be gently riding across flat surfaces, then gears may not be the most important feature on your desired list.  However, if you plan to ride off-road or up steep hills, then gears are most definitely your friend.  Gears will help you when you need it most and may help to prevent injury to your joints.

Is it best to buy the most expensive mountain bike?

A:  Not necessarily.  You need to assess what you are looking for in a bike along with your average usage.  If you have set $300 as your budget, then looking for an aluminum frame with a good set of gears and suspension should be top of your list of priorities.  Spending less than your budget on your bike may free-up some cash for a good trail helmet for cycling, providing your head with a great set of coverage, an effective peak and constructed strongly.

Glasses are also useful, particularly for riding off-road, protecting your eyes from flying dirt and debris.  Bike shoes may also be a good investment for you, enabling a better power transfer from your feet to the pedals.  Additionally, you may find it useful to carry a backpack when riding, ensuring that you have your water bottle, your phone and any other items you may potentially need, particularly in an unexpected emergency.

When riding off-road, you may be riding within deserted areas, and so phone to communicate with the emergency service is vital if you should suffer from a fall or an accident.

Budget Mountain Bikes Buyers Guide

What to look for when buying a budget mountain bike

You won’t always have the best information coming from bike salesmen and manufactures. You are going to need to know what to look out for when you are buying your first mountain bike. Budget bikes are not like others. Most of them have been made using parts that are a little less superior to those of their more expensive counterparts. However, you still want to ensure you are getting the best bang for your buck.

We have put together a short buyers guide of things you should keep an eye out for when buying a budget mountain bike in 2020. The times are changing quickly, and the bikes we have today are not like the ones available decades ago.

Fit

When you’re buying your first bike, you want to keep it simple. Look for a bike that is the right size for you, and is not going to be too long or too short. Luckily, manufacturers provide sizing charts which make it easy to figure out which size is right for you.

Comfort

Having dual suspension can be a great thing. Are you going to be riding on mostly smooth trails with very few rocks or large obstacles in your way? If so, you can afford to stick with a hardtail bike that doesn’t come with dual suspension. If the trails near your house are more rugged and rigorous, a dual suspension bike can really come in handy and give you that extra leeway you need. If you don’t have enough suspension or give in your riding, it will be harder on your arms and legs and will make riding a lot less fun.

Weight

The weight of the bike will make a big difference in a few different ways. First off, a lighter bike will be easier to store and move around for the times when your trail is too far away to ride to. A lighter frame will allow you to have more control over the bike. You will be able to stop quicker, turn tighter, and have dominion over where you are going. Sometimes heavier bikes can be better.

But in the case of beginner mountain bikes, you are going to want something a little bit lighter. Aluminum frames are designed to be more lightweight than steel or other forms of metal. An aluminum frame should be what you look for in a budget mountain bike. Especially if you’re just starting out.

Brakes

The type of brakes on your bike are what are ultimately going to keep you safe and away from that tree that you’re speeding towards. Disc brakes are the most reliable brakes on the market and are being used by all the top riders. They work better, last longer and don’t break as easily. You’re going to want to make sure you’re staying as safe as possible on the trail, and, hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes are going to be the piece of the puzzle that helps you do that.

Tires

Tires are your point of contact with the ground. To ensure that they stay that way and the point of contact doesn’t become your face, you want to make sure you’re getting the tires that will be right for you. Knobby, thicker tires will allow you to have more grip and comfort when you are riding. If the tires lack the ability to dig into the dirt, you may find yourself sliding all over the place and out of control. Keep it tight and on the right terrain by getting tires that will keep you safe time after time.

Reviews

Sometimes, the best way to tell if something is going to work for you is to see what other people have to say about it. If you are looking for a bike that has a ton of terrible reviews, or no reviews at all, maybe that’s a bike that you can steer clear of. But if people are saying a lot of great things about a bike, and specifically talking about the type of riding you will be doing, then you can probably be pretty confident that the bike will do the trick for you as well.

Most people are there to help and give their honest opinions. If your bike has a lot of positive feedback, you can likely go ahead and pull the trigger as long as it hits on the other points that are important to you.

Conclusion

Buying a budget mountain bike should be a fun and easy process. After all, you’ve decided that you’re going to get your adrenaline fix from speeding down a mountain, and not from being angry over buyers remorse. We hope to have provided you with the information you need in order to pick the right budget mountain bike for you. You’re about to embark on a wonderfully exhilarating journey and you will hopefully enjoy every moment.

Mountain Bikes Buyers Guide

All of the mountain bikes we’ve listed above are great, no matter what you’re looking for or what kind of riding and trails you’re into. However, actually choosing the bike that’s right for you is still a big decision; especially if you’re planning on sinking thousands into your next ride.

In the following paragraphs, we’re going to explore exactly what you need to think about when it comes to choosing the right bikes, ensuring you have everything you need to make the right decision.

Price

The first thing you’ll need to consider is how much you’re willing to spend. Mountain bikes can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, so it’s important to make sure you’re setting your price, so you know where you’re looking.

Suspension

One of the most important aspects of a mountain bike is the suspension or the part of the bike that’s going to make it much more comfortable to ride over bumpy terrain. There are two main types of suspension; full and dual. This will come down to personal preference.

Hardtail or not?

Hardtail refers to a very unique feature some bikes have, and some don’t. In short, it refers to a bike that has suspension in the front, but not in the back, which will usually mean the bike is lighter, more responsive, and, more importantly, faster.

Wheels

It’s vital you pay attention to what wheels you’re using on your bike. This refers to the type of wheel, the rubber, and the size. Not only do you need to be comfortable when riding and have a bike suitable for your height, but you’ll also need to consider how durable the wheels are for the type of trails you’re going to be tackling.

Summary

As you can see, when it comes to choosing the right mountain bike for you, there’s such a wonderful amount of choices out there, leaving you sure you’ll be able to find the best one for you. Take all the information we’ve given you, along with our recommendations, and you’ll easily be able to treat yourself to the best experience possible!

Mountain Bike’s Grips Buyers Guide

There are a few things that it is useful to bear in mind when you’re choosing what grips to buy. In this buyer’s guide, we’ve explained why some of the different features might be useful to different riders.

Material

There are a variety of materials that you can choose from when deciding what grips you want to buy. Often a good choice for your grips is to choose something as soft as possible. This might mean it’ll wear out a little bit more quickly, but it’ll also give you superior comfort and cushioning capacity.

Most of the grips in this review are made out of rubber. Usually, it’s a very good option, but it can come in a range of hardness. If you’re looking for something with maximum cushioning, look for something which tells you it is especially soft.

Texture and Profile

Texture and profile both improve the traction of the grip. Texture tends to refer to a pattern on a grip that can offer both comfort and traction.

Profile refers to when part of the grip has a raised design. This can make the grip a little bit chunkier, but it will offer better traction, especially in wet conditions.

If you’re looking for a racing design, choose something with a slimmer profile.

Ergonomic Design

Ergonomic designs work by encouraging the rider to hold the handlebars in a way which improves comfort and prevents numbness. They’re a longer-term solution to problems of discomfort. Sometimes they also offer additional padding, sometimes they offer less of this.

Ergonomic design is a good choice if you do a lot of long-distance riding and you often find your hands getting sore.

Installation

A lot of these handlebars come with locking rings. This means they won’t move around when you’re holding on to them. This can be a really useful feature, especially for ergonomic models where it really matters what angle they are positioned at.

They’re a little bit more difficult to swap in and out, so if that matters to you, choose something with the slide-on installation.

Conclusion

When you’re choosing your grips the most important things to consider are comfort and traction. If you’ve been getting sore hands when you’re out riding, replace your grips with something softer and more comfortable. If you’re looking for improved handling, maybe in wet conditions, choose a grip that gives you plenty of control.

Whatever you choose, spend some time thinking about your decision: grips are a really overlooked part of most bikes. As a rider, you’ll spend a lot of time with them, and they can make a lot of difference to your riding experience without you having to spend far too much money.

When we think of some of the most important features on a bike, we often think of how many gears it has, or just how good the suspension is when riding; we never stop to think about the seat and whether or not it is comfortable to sit on.

Mountain Bike Seat Buyers Guide

So you’ve seen our list and are still with questions, welcome to the buyer’s guide, a section where we will cover what to look out for when purchasing a mountain bike seat of your own — or any bike seat for that matter. There’s quite a lot to cover, so if you find that we gloss over a subject or question then know that there are plenty of other sources out there for you to check out that goes into these topics in greater detail!

We have spent our entire lives around bikes of all kinds, we consider ourselves experts for this reason and this reason alone. When we were working on this article, multiple people were involved, all of whom brought something different to the table which definitely helped rid our list of any biases we might have had to a certain product/manufacturer. Having multiple people at our disposal also allowed us to bounce ideas off of one another to make sure we were on the same page.

Going into this article, we knew we had to hit multiple beats at the same time to appeal to the most people possible. This was quite a difficult line to toe, although we are more than happy with the final list in its current form. We tried to avoid switching out certain seats once our list was finished for obvious reasons. The process of sorting our list took around 3 months, time well spent with no wasted motions on our part!

We completely understand that we have only included 10 mountain bike seats here and aren’t ruling out the fact that there are plenty of other products out right now that might apply to you. If you are going to look for a bike seat of your own, then you should know that there are a few things you should consider to make sure you are purchasing the right mountain bike seat that works for you and you alone.

What to look out for

If you are going to look for your own mountain bike seat — or any bike seat for that matter — you should first identify where you are cycling too and the length of time it takes to get there. Those who cycle farther distances will find that they require a far sturdier bike seat to carry them till the very end. Bike seats nowadays are far more consistent than they were before, this you’ll see almost instantly as you begin your search.

Making a list of requirements should be your first cause of action. What you choose to include on your list will be entirely subjective, although most will include the words: comfortable or durable, we guarantee it. Not only will this list help you to pick the right bike seat, but it will also mean that you don’t settle for a bike seat that isn’t what you’re looking for and is just money wasted.

Once you have established your own requirements, next comes the easy part. Online sources should allow you to quickly source some of the best bike seats going right now. Sites such as Amazon are great indicators of quality thanks to the built-in user reviews section that wraps up a general consensus from previous customers. If a product has terrible reviews attached, it might be worth moving on and avoiding this seat.

Most bike seats you see all vary in terms of the comfort you have once they are mounted and then sat on as you cycle. Some are far more comfortable than others. Looking online is great and all, but it doesn’t provide an accurate idea on how comfortable they are unless you own something similar already and then pictures should suffice. Visiting a local bike store and having the seats in your hand could give you a better idea on what to expect.

When looking at the best mountain bike seats, you have two primary considerations to think about. Most bike seats are relatively comfortable; however not all seats should be considered equal. Most seats utilize thick padding unless otherwise stated. The more padding, the more comfortable the seat will be, although keep in mind it will make the seat a lot heavier than before depending on the width/length of the seat.

The suspension is yet another primary consideration one should have. The suspension will make a massive difference in the quality of your ride outright. If you are someone who has issues with their lower back/legs, then you should be looking for a bike seat that can take the punishment of your bodyweight continually bobbing up and down on the seat — especially if you like cycling somewhere that is rather bumpy.

Other features in these seats include LED lighting, something that isn’t considered necessary if you already have a backlight on your bike, but it doesn’t hurt to have extra. Although it’s nice to have some extra lights, it isn’t worth paying extra for if you are looking for a bike seat that does the basics. Look at your list and see whether or not you prioritize style over durability, this should help you make the right decision.

Are bike seats expensive?

This depends entirely on the bike seat you want to buy and the sorts of features you want to come with it. For example, if you want a seat with LED lights and extra padding, then you are probably going to pay more than you would if you wanted just a standard seat. Consult the list you’ve made at the beginning to make sure you’re buying correctly. Keep in mind that the more stylish the seat looks, the pricier it will be.

Is the shape of the seat important?

Yes, the shape of your bike seat is incredibly important as each shape fits a different kind of rider. For example, if you are someone who likes to move fast, then finding a long and thin bike seat will be ideal as it not only decreases the weight of the bike, but it also means you can generate more power from that general area. A wider seat might be fitting for those who traverse your more rocky terrain as there will be more comfort underneath you as you travel across this ground!

Which brands are the best brands for bike seats?

This is an entirely subjective question, one that comes with varying answers depending on your own personal preferences. We tend to enjoy the products from DAWAY as they tend to be a lot more durable/comfortable at the same time. You’ll find that different brands deal with different kinds of bike seats, so finding the right manufacturer for you might consist of trial and error.

Some manufacturers product more expensive seats than others, so make sure you have what you’re looking for when going to the checkout or risk wasting money. Again, your list should give you an idea on whether or not the seat you’re looking at it is the right one for you.

Electric Mountain Bikes Buyer’s Guide

There are so many more great electric bike products out there, but above are the top ten that have been selected for review and to demonstrate a range of features and attributes that you may not have considered you would be looking for.

The question remains, what are you looking for when you are buying an electric bike? Consider the following criteria discussed below to give you a little bit more of a clearer picture.

Battery

The battery that comes with the electric bike is important. You need to be verifying:

a) How long does it take to charge? You don’t want to have to wait around for a full day if you run the battery flat. Average charging time would be around three hours to get a full charge.

b) What size is the battery? This is important as it dictates how many miles you can get from one single charge. If you are using your bike for your daily commute, this becomes important quickly.

c) Is the battery detachable? This is a matter of security as well as a matter of convenience. You want to make sure the battery can’t be stolen and that if needed, you can remove it at will.

d) Is the battery protected for all weather conditions? If the answer is no, then this may not be the bike for daily use. The battery should be in a protective casing to keep it safe from all types of weather.

Motor Size

The size of the motor will determine how powerful your electric bike is. It also determines what speed the bike can go at, what weight it can take and how durable the bike will be in the long run.

All electric bikes come with a variety of different motor sizes that are usually powerful enough to be able to support an average sized adult. However, this information is definitely worth checking out pre-purchase- just in case!

Range

How far are you going on your electric mountain bike, if the answer is: Just a few miles, then it doesn’t really matter. However, if you are intending to use your bike on a daily basis, then the range becomes a little bit more relevant.

With things like mountain biking and off-road riding, it is important to factor in the range that your bike is capable of. If your battery fails you because you didn’t charge it properly or you miscalculated the impact of your speed on the capacity of the bike, then you will end up in a predicament.

Regardless, you need to know exactly how many miles you can get out of a charge so that you don’t end up struggling unnecessarily and behind schedule. Most mainstream electric bikes will provide a range of around 20 miles, often more, from one charge.

If you are looking for a bigger range, look at battery size and how it correlates with the size of the motor installed on the electric mountain bike. This will normally give you a better idea of how far the bike will take you.

Speed

The average speed that an electric mountain bike is capable of is around 20 MPH. This is less restricted while mountain biking than while biking on the road, however, it may not be wise to reach such top speeds while trailing on rough terrain.

There are in fact, some bikes that can go up to 28-30 MPH. This may be more suitable for flatter terrain.

The weight of the person riding and the height of the person riding will dictate the top speed that the electric bike is capable of. With that in mind, the majority of electric mountain bikes can sustain at top speed capacity of around 160 lbs. This, of course, varies from model to model.

Brakes

Brakes are important. Brakes are the key safety feature of any vehicle, and the electric bike is no exception to this. If you are using your bike for top speeds, mountain biking or riding it around in traffic, you need to be diligent that the brakes provided on the bike are fit for purpose.

The majority of electric bikes will be fitted and made with front and rear brakes, which provide extra safety and extra stopping power. Fewer of these bikes will be equipped with brakes that are quick stopping. This is an additional safety feature, on some bikes but not all, that is highly recommended for you to look for in your electric mountain bike purchase.

However, this is not always the case and is definitely something that needs researching before making any purchase. The brakes are the last thing you need to be worrying about while riding!

Design

There are a few different designs of electric mountain bike out there.

Foldable bikes are becoming ever more popular. Being foldable means that the bike is storable. This means that it does not take up unnecessary space in a house or a shed etc. It also means that it could be hung up on a wall, should this be a requirement. They certainly have advantages over bikes that cannot fold, and their overall integrity of strength and purpose is not compromised.

Some electric mountain bikes are made as multipurpose. This means that they can be used as an electric bike or a pedal bike, or as a bit of both. Some are even built with speed cruise control functions for ease of use.

It is worth considering just in case something goes wrong with the technology and you need to continue with your journey. Lots of electric bikes can be adapted into pedal bikes with ease, and this might be a really sensible option to opt for when making your electric mountain bike purpose.

The Warranty

Lots of electric mountain bikes now come with a warranty. This is a good thing to have on any electrical product that you own, as you never know what might happen or when it might happen.

However, it is worth looking at the finer detail.

First of all, you should be looking for a warranty that lasts at least a year. The preference is procuring a warranty that is going to last for more than a year, but most companies do not offer this. If you find one that does, great, this might be the factor that swings your decision in that bike’s favor.

Second of all, you need to establish what exactly the warranty will actually cover you for. Some warranties, not all of them by any stretch but definitely some, only cover you for certain parts of the bike that might break. You want to make sure that you are at least covered, at the very least, for the battery and the motor.

Thirdly, you might strike gold and find a warranty that covers all parts for many years. However, this seems unlikely to happen after shopping around.

Something to think about maybe taking out extra insurance to cover your contents or making sure you know a good mechanic on standby.

Expert Tip

The most common tire size for a mountain bike is the standard 26 inch. This is suitable for most mainstream and hardy types of riding. However, there are other options that are worth exploring if you are looking for something a bit bigger and better. It is worth talking to an expert in store to fully understand the wheel size choice debate.

Did you know?

There are a lot of health benefits to mountain biking including improvement for heart health, joint health and even your mental health and concentration capacity.

If you enjoy cycling to work or journeying across the country during the holidays, you will recognize the need to purchase the correct cycling equipment. You will, of course, purchase your cycling helmet and your high-vis equipment and safety reflectors, and maybe some performance-enhancing clothes. Although, you may not have considered purchasing bike shoes, assuming that standard leisure shoes will suffice perfectly.

You would be incorrect in this notion, however, because when cycling it is quite common for your feet to slip from the pedals, hindering your performance and perhaps even placing you inside a degree of danger. Mountain bike shoes encompass all of the benefits of modern running shoes beginning with the breathable mesh material, to the secure fastening, through to the possibility of the removable sock liner.

Additionally, mountain bike shoes also feature rigid soles to maintain their position within the pedals, featuring compatibility with cleats and increasing your potential cycling performance.

Mountain Bike Shoes Buyers Guide

A mountain bike shoe is certainly an understated piece of any cyclist’s equipment, yet a tool which performs an important role within the sport. A rigid sole ensures that sufficient power is transferred to each pedal while a strong shoe and a secure fit fully protect your feet and ensure that comfort is paramount.

Whichever type of mountain bike shoes you decide to purchase, it is vital that you try before you buy, checking the fit, the fastening, and the kind of sole to ensure that your feet are comfortable and that your cycling performance will benefit.

Fastenings

The fastenings included within your mountain bike shoes are very important, ensuring that your feet are secure within the shoes and that your feet cannot slip. Many mountain bike shoes contain Velcro fastenings, providing a cheaper yet efficient option. Velcro straps hold the feet in place although adjusting the fit can be tricky and so you may have to compromise to achieve the perfect fit. Velcro straps are light and can help enhance a lightweight mountain bike shoe greatly.

Some mountain bike shoes may contain ratchets, providing additional adjustability to that of Velcro straps and offering a secure fit for your feet. A benefit of your mountain bike shoes containing a ratchet fastening is that you can adjust your bike shoes while cycling, ensuring that your ride is uninterrupted and that your performance is at your optimum. However, a ratchet fastening is quite difficult to loosen.

Another type of fastening is the dial fastening system, which may feature predominantly on the high-end mountain bike shoe. A dial fastening offers a secure fit which is also easy to adjust and hold the feet. A Boa dial may provide the best quality of adjustments, and therefore may ensure that the highest performance is attained. Marginal gains laces are an additional type of fastening, providing comfort on the go, although offering less practicality as you cannot adjust the laces while cycling.

Soles

Different types of shoe sole are additionally important for cyclists, with an emphasis on stiff soles being the desired variation in order to achieve high performance. When a stiff sole is pressed down onto the pedal, the sole will remain rigid and will not bend, transferring power from the sole to the pedal.

A lighter sole is another quality which benefits your ride, with the lightest soles joining the most expensive mountain bike shoes. Cheaper or beginner soles may be made from plastic with the most expensive mountain bike shoes consisting of carbon composite soles or carbon-soled shoes.

Cleat Types

The types of cleats which will join your bike shoes include two-bolt cleats and three-bolt cleats. Two-bolt cleats are perfect for riding off-road, being compatible with Shimano SPDs as well as Crank Brothers. Riding across roads will require you to use three-bolt clears, providing a wider platform and increasing the power transfer across each pedal.

Heat Molding

If you are a competitive cyclist and have more money to spend, you may consider purchasing customized heat molding mountain bike shoes to find the best fit for your fit and your needs. The arch of your feet will be supported, ensuring that the power transfer is at it’s optimum and that your comfort is paramount. This could be the perfect solution for individuals with flat feet or those with arch-related issues.

Weather Conditions

Before purchasing your mountain bike shoes, consider how you will be using them and what weather conditions you will most likely be riding in. If you are a beginner or want to ride leisurely or for short commutes to work, waterproof winter cycling shoes may be the best choice for your needs. Alternatively, if you are considering competing or time racing, performance cycling shoes should be the best choice, providing a carbon sole to ensure a strong power transfer.

Does it matter which shoes I wear for cycling?

A: Yes, if you are serious about riding. Of course, any pair of shoes will enable you to ride a bike. But if your shoes fit poorly, then your feet may slip as you ride, and your feet may slip away from the pedal if the soles are soft. Buying a pair of bike shoes will ensure that your feet fit perfectly and that the soles are rigid enough to provide the needed power transfer to the pedals.

What shoes are best for competing in a triathlon?

A: If you compete in a triathlon then you will need specific tri-shoes. Tri-shoes enable you to put them on and off as you cycle, offering a loop on the heel so that you can change footwear when required. Tri-shoes will include drainage holes for when your feet are wet. Ensure that you check with your retailer to see which exact pair of shoes will benefit you.

Mountain Bike Helmet Buyers Guide

There is a whole load of different mountain bike helmets in the list above and just looking at them can put you in a dilemma over which ones you want to purchase. It’s important that you do look out for certain factors when you’re researching them though. In our buyers guide just below we’ve discussed these factors that you need to look out for.

Materials

This is very important because the type of materials that the mountain bike helmet has been made out of will indicate how strong and reliable it actually is. Not only this but if you happen to purchase a mountain bike helmet that hasn’t been made from the correct materials, then it could also be putting your life at risk. This is because if you ever fall while you’re on your bike your head, brain and neck won’t be completely protected and it could cause an injury.

On the outside of the helmet, there should be some type of hard material, like a shell. This will stop most of the damage. However, what the mountain bike helmet has been made from on the inside of the helmet is also very important. This is because it should be made from some type of foam material. The reason why this is important is that it will be able to cushion any blows that may come your way, and it will be able to stop your head from getting affected by them.

Design

The design of the mountain bike helmet is also very important, and you may have noticed that there are quite a variety of designs. You may have seen some that have quite a lot of air vents, while others may have more of a closed in design. The design doesn’t overly matter, but you will need to know what it is you want the helmet for before you do go ahead and purchase one.

This is because some of the designs are suitable for more than one activity, so if you want one that is like this, then you will need to know beforehand because a lot of them are not. You may also want to consider what type of season you want to cycle in, because the air vents will give you an amazing benefit on a hot summers day, as it will allow your head to breathe a lot more easily, plus, you won’t get as hot.

Visor

Some of the mountain bike helmets have this feature while some of them actually don’t. It’s not a necessity, but it can also be very helpful. This is because it will be able to protect your eyes when you’re cycling from a whole variety of things, like the sun, mud, rain and even tree branches; therefore, it really does provide you with a lot of benefits.

Not only this, but it will also increase how safe you are when you’re riding your bike, because if you did happen to get a tree branch hit you in your eye when you’re cycling then it’s likely that it will cause you to possibly fall off of your bike and cause you further injuries. Therefore this can really be a very useful protective feature to have.

If you don’t like this feature that much then you can also purchase specific mountain bike helmets that have a removable visor, so it gives you the option to take it off if you don’t want it on anymore.

Buyers guide questions

How do you clean a mountain bike helmet?

If you wear your bike helmet for a long period of time or even if you just wear it a couple of times, but in very horrible weather conditions then it is likely to get dirty. There are two different ways that you can clean a mountain bike helmet. First of all, if it isn’t that dirty, then it’s probably best to just use a wet wipe to clean the helmet, this is because this will wipe any dirt away instantly.

However, if your mountain bike helmet is a little bit dirtier than this then you may need to use soap and water to clean it. When you do this, you will need to use a cloth or a sponge to dip into the water and then clean over the helmet. One thing that you don’t want to do it pour the water over it, as this will get the inside of the helmet wet too.

Sometimes the inside of the helmet may also need cleaning, because if you wear it for a very long period of time, then it can develop a few odors, which is something you don’t want. You will need to read the description of the product to see if it has a removable inner or not. If it does, then this will be a lot easier to clean, as it’s likely that you will be able to put it into the washing machine.

If you can’t then you can always hand wash it and leave it to dry naturally. However, if it doesn’t have this feature, then it’s best to use a wet cloth that has been soaked in warm soapy water and rub it into the inner material. Once you have done this leave it to dry naturally.

How does a helmet protect you?

Because every bike helmet has a very strong and sturdy plastic shell on the outside of it and foam on the inside of it means that it’s able to protect your head and your brain. When you do crash the foam from the inside of the helmet will cushion the fall. Not only this, but the shell will make the helmet skid along the floor, which prevents your neck from getting jerked, plus, the shell is also able to keep the foam in a good condition.

Can you use your mountain bike helmet for other activities too?

You may have noticed in the list above that there are a couple of mountain bike helmets that also say that they are suitable for other sporting activities too, like skateboarding for instance. Usually, a mountain bike helmet can be used for a whole range of different activities, and they are suitable for them because at the end of the day they will still be able to protect your head if you have an accident.

It’s important that you do check the description of the mountain bike helmet though and this is because it may say in there that it is only suitable for cycling. You don’t want to purchase a mountain bike helmet and think that it’s suitable for other situations when it’s really not. If it doesn’t say anything in the description, then it should be okay to use for other activities, but you may just want to double check and ask the seller. Normally the mountain bike helmets will be suitable for other types of cycling too.

Expert tip:

There are a whole variety of different bike helmets on the market, so it’s important that you know what type of cycling you plan to do before you purchase one.

Did you know?

If your mountain bike helmet doesn’t fit you perfectly then, it won’t be able to protect you as much and could cause you an injury.

Conclusion

After looking at the list above and after researching online you will be able to see that there is a whole load of different mountain bike helmets, and this can make it very tricky when it comes down to you deciding which one you want to purchase. It’s also important that you compare the mountain bike helmets before you choose which one you wish to purchase. This is because each of them has different features and you won’t want to miss out on a feature you later wish that you had.

Not only this, but it’s important that you check a whole load of factors, like what material the mountain bike helmet is made from, as you will want to make sure that it is able to protect you and that it is also reliable. Plus, you should also check out our buyers guide to see what we’ve discussed and what you need to look out for before you do purchase your mountain bike helmet.
